Green CIO Tip #1: Green IT project should be planned and implemented in phased manner

23 December 2008 No Comment

With the rising cost of energy, more IT equipment translates to higher cost of power consumption. So if products continue consuming the power they have been consuming, then it could have serious cost implications. The main goal of Green IT is to reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product’s lifetime, and promote recyclability.
Web-based applications, multiple side printing, reduction in other paper usage, collaboration solutions can contribute towards the “greenness” of an organization. The Information Technology industry is responsible for greater than 2% of global CO² emissions, most resulting from the power consumption of PCs, servers and cooling systems. “Green IT” is an important agenda that most of the IT industry must deal with.

An enterprise must look at all the aspects of the environmental impact instead of focusing only on the most obvious ones. Therefore, planning and implementing the initiative in a phased manner is the secret to energy efficient and clean IT.

Industry bits: IBM ad claims 40% energy cost reduction by migrating to Green IT practices. Are you convinced with that claim?
