Yahoo, like other Internet giants, is taking electricity consumption level with serious concern. Improvement in energy utilization techniques are hardly catching up with the phenomenal growth experienced by data centers powering popular Internet services. Researchers and companies are increasingly looking into this space. This Yahoo Labs page documents few challenges for researchers:

What impact will virtualization, cloud computing, and other innovations have upon net and relative energy consumption?

What are likely to be factors that increase or decrease energy efficiency at the level of code, server utilization, and data center design?

How do we benchmark improvements in energy efficiency of computing in a manner that is both standardized and meaningful on an industry level (MIPS, per search, per page view, per visit)?

Industry standard metric, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), for this data center still doesn’t come close to average EPA number – which is at 1.92. Yahoo is promising PUE rating of 1.08. According to Yahoo, electricity saved from this data center could power 1.1 million laptops for a year and a mere 9,000 New York households!
